PHOTO TIPS & NEWS

The World of photography is moving forward at an incredible pace!

Even with all the new technology, people either don't know how to use their camera properly, or are unsure of the basic techneques, people are always asking me for tips and ideas on how they can improve their photographs. If you would like to pick up tips and ideas on how to take better photos, checkout this page, I will be putting on new tips every week ( With my compliments), USE THEM AND HAVE FUN!

I will also be letting you know of anything I am adding to my site, and to keep you up to date with events I am going to etc.

This is my favorite photographic saying ( told to me in Tunisia by the then, senior photographer at the Guardian newspaper, Dennis Thorpe ).
"If you are looking...it's happening"

TIP.1

Photography means painting with light, and the most important element in creating
good images is the quality of the light illuminating the subject, Get the light right and you're on to a winner!

TIP.2
Use a U.V. or skylight filter at all times to remove blue haze on bright days and
also to protect your lens, it's a lot cheaper to replace the filter than the lens!

TIP.3
To avoid flare, which is caused by shooting near or in to the Sun, use a lens hood, if you don't have one, use your hand to cup over the top of the lens, but do take care not to get your hand in the picture!

TIP.4

Use a tripod and cable release whenever you can as this helps composition, and is must for long exposures, ( also helpful for fending off cows in fields!)

TIP.5

Lighting at varous times if the day, Early mornings and Late afternoons are the best times to create the more interesting images as the sun creates shadows that give shape to the subject. The sun in the late afternoon, about 1hour before sunset gives a lovely orange hue.

TIP.6

Hi, I've had an email from someone asking about Tip .4 They asked "how to I keep the camera still if I don't have a tripod with me?" Good question, 1. If you are standing up in the open without anything to lean on, tuck your elbows in to your body for support, 2. You could use a wall, a tree, a bench, infact, anything that is solid!
Your car is another useable object, 3. If you are lying down for example, you could use your camera bag if its firm enough.

NEWS!

Just to let you all know that I am a Fan of most motorsports, and I will be going up to Valencia on the 3rd February to watch the new F1 cars testing! My son James, ( who is a motorsport nut,) has asked me to put some of my motorsport images on to the Galleries page! So I Will! after the F1 testing, If the weather has been kind I will update it with some of those.

TIP 7.

Choose a good quality camera bag that is also weatherproof, buy one that is bigger than your present needs, as the more interested you become in photography the more equipment you will buy, ( you have been warned )!

TIP 8.
A Common mistake made by beginners to photography is to assume that the camera should always be held horizontally because it is designed to be more comfortable that way. Use a Vertical format if it complements your subjects shape.

TIP 9.
A simple way to improve the impact of an image is to get closer to the subject so it fills the frame. It prevents the subject from becoming lost against dull or distracting backgrounds. If you are unable to move closer, Use a zoom or telephoto lens to help fill the frame.

TIP 10.
Focus sharply on your main subject to emphasize its importance in your composition. As an example, by using a long lens and selecting a wide aperture, it is possible to transform an ugly or distracting background in to an attractive wash of colour that greatly enhances the composition of the image.

Tip 11.
To enhance your images, a good idea is to "frame" an image, this can be done in lots of ways.
The use of a window or door, an archway, the branch of a tree and so on, ( see below as an example)
